Recycling of mineral wool during production process
Efficiency and Profitability of recycling plants for the production of stone and glass wool
Many manufacturers of stone and glass wool dispose their overall production-related waste and therefore lose their profit. Costs for the production of the mineral wool waste, which shall be later disposed (raw materials, energy, human and machinery resources), are followed by further costs for the disposal itself (transport and landfill). The environmental impact of landfilling the waste and using raw materials and energy for its production should also not be underestimated.
Recycling is to be integrated into production process
Solution: the majority of the stone or glass wool waste that was previously destined for disposal can be processed by the recycling plants of FAS Hansek in such a way that those waste is subsequently suitable for reuse.
Advantages of recycling systems for mineral wool
Increase of production capacity and productivity
Saving of energy and raw materials
Reduction of waste
Significant relief of environment
Turning waste into profit
During production of mineral wool, further waste quantities (product residues and unsaleable products) of around 5 - 8 % of the total production quantity are generated in addition to the edge waste (6 - 8 %). In total, this can quickly result into waste in amount of 5 % to 15 % of the total production quantity, which is therefore not suitable for sale.
Following consideration shows the profit increase, which is possible due to the use of FAS recycling plant (Fig. 2), based on a very conservative approach for a stone wool production plant with a manufacturing capacity of 6 t/h:
In total: | 1,1 Mio. €/a |
Product volume: | approx. 40.000 t/a |
Amount of waste material = 6 %: | approx. 2.400 t/a |
Disposal and freight cost: | approx. 40 €/t => approx. 100.000 €/a |
Average product revenue: | approx. 550 €/t |
Additional revenue from recycling of waste material: | approx. 1,3 Mio. €/a |
As the additional revenue of € 1.3 million/a (2,400 t/a x € 550/t) is generated without any significant increase of material, energy and labour costs, the majority of it (assumed here to be approx. 80 %) should be considered as increase of profit: |
|
a) by recycling of waste: | approx. 1 Mio. €/a |
b) by saving of disposal costs | approx. 100.000 €/a |

Cost savings due to use of the FAS recycling system
Additionally the recycled waste increases the amount of product that can be sold at full price. This means a boost of revenue with almost no increase in the consumption of raw materials, energy and labour ressources.
Active protection of our environment
An additional effect of recycling systems produced by FAS is an appreciable relief of our environment due to avoiding the disposal of mineral wool waste. The manufacturer thus fulfils its commitment to sustainable management - a clear benefit for the turnover, market position and credibility with customers.
